Pathological pattern formation and cortical propagation of epileptic seizures.

The stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) stated by Steyn-Ross and co-workers constitute a model of mesoscopic electrical activity of the human cortex. A simplification in which spatial variation and stochastic input are neglected yields ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which are amenable to analysis by techniques of dynamical systems theory. Bifurcation diagrams are develope...

Control of epileptic seizures by electrical low frequency deep brain stimulation: A review of probable mechanisms

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease with no definitive method in treatment. Notably, the main way to treat and control epileptic seizures is drug therapy. However, about 20-30% of patients with epilepsy are drug resistant and require other therapeutic manners. Deep brain stimulation is a new therapeutic strategy for these patients. Conspicuously, there are no clear answers for basi...

Prediction of epileptic seizures.

For almost 40 years, neuroscientists thought that epileptic seizures began abruptly, just a few seconds before clinical attacks. There is now mounting evidence that seizures develop minutes to hours before clinical onset. This change in thinking is based on quantitative studies of long digital intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from patients being evaluated for epilepsy surge...

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) need to be differentiated from epileptic seizures as the management varies for both. Presence of tongue biting, falling and urinary incontinence favors a diagnosis of epileptic seizures. We report two children with features suggestive of epileptic seizures that were eventually diagnosed as PNES with the help of video-EEG monitoring.
